Fracking Moratorium Passes VA Committee – SB951

This brief article is a hopeful sign that things might be going well for the 5 Counties in the Taylorsville County. Scroll down to the bottom of the article. The Virginia legislature is actually considering a 4-year moratorium on fracking in what is called the Eastern Virginia Groundwater Management Area. State officials fear the aquifer is being depleted faster than it can be replenished. Their fear is well-founded – a recent groundwater study there showed that the aquifer is being depleted at a rate 5 times its replenish rate.

So far, only the Senate Agriculture, Conservation and Natural Resources Committee has passed it forward, but it was a 9-5 vote for it. Senator Scott Surovell was pushing for an outright ban, but couldn’t get the necessary votes. Yay for Senator Surovell!

Vincent McGuire: For a Lafayette City Council capable of governing

The sitting Lafayette City Council foiled the fracking moratorium, causing justified outcry among many residents. They revealed their disdain for Lafayette small businesses by banning sodas on children’s menus. Some councilors often don’t show up to work, mainly councilors Gustavo Reyna and Merrily Mazza.

NT fracking inquiry: Economic benefit uncertain, Australia Institute think tank warns

A new economic assessment of the impact hydraulic fracking would have on the Northern Territory shows the financial benefit does not warrant a lifting of the current moratorium, a Canberra-based think tank says.

Lafayette City Council to take new oil and gas regulations into own hands as moratorium looms

Such regulations come as the city’s controversial fracking moratorium looms. It has amassed resistance from industry officials and anti-oil and gas activists alike. If officially sanctioned next month on second reading, the process would stay any new oil and gas development until late 2018.

Lafayette’s fracking moratorium to return for a vote amid political wrangling

A decision may come down on whether Lafayette will impose an embargo on newdrilling permits within city limits Tuesday night. If approved by City Council — and officially sanctioned next month on second reading — the moratorium would preempt new oil and gas development until late 2018, unless officials iron out new regulations before then, they said.

Lisa Flynn: Take back local government

Fracking was banned by the people, by vote, in Longmont. The ban was preempted by the state. Fracking was under moratorium until last May in Boulder County. The moratorium was lifted under threat of lawsuit by the Colorado attorney general. Our state does not and will not protect citizens but instead is motivated by corporate interests. No hydraulic fracturing permit has ever been denied by the commission whose mission is supposed to include the health and safety of the people, the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission (COGCC). This while a house explodes, killing two, in Firestone. The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) turns a blind eye to the emission studies while children in Erie are suffering nosebleeds which are mere symptoms of more serious insults to their bodies.
