Deniers Publish “Studies” on Fake “Science Journals”

This article points to a new trend for climate change denial “scientists” who publish their “scientific studies” for a fee on websites with nice sounding names, but which have virtually no science-based reviews of the studies. If you pay, you can publish. It is another example of how deniers are intentionally working to cast doubt onto actual scientific studies. Many sites are named, as are many of the “scientists”.

Fracked gas is a health hazard

Nicole Jacobs’ letter “Fracked gas health boon” claims a health boon from fracked gas. She cites only her gas-funded report and ignores hundreds of independent, peer-reviewed published articles.

Fracking has net financial benefit despite drawbacks, study finds

It brings heavy truck traffic, pollution and more crime. But a recent economic study on the controversial gas drilling method hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, says accounting for both the known downsides and benefits, it does more good than bad.

Well, that is if you don’t consider the health impact on people, or the damage to the environment, and the fact that there are other, non-polluting sources of energy. This is an example of proponents of fracking pushing positive aspects of fracking, while ignoring the negative aspects.

Journal corrects fracking study over undisclosed industry funding

An influential science journal has issued a correction to a paper on fracking and water safety, after revelations that the authors did not disclose their financial ties to energy giant Chesapeake Energy. The correction was prompted by an article in InsideClimate News in April. InsideClimate News. 8 May 2015.

Study: Flawed methane monitor underestimates leaks at oil and gas sites

Researchers find there may be drastically more methane in the air than is being reported to industry and government. By Lisa Song, InsideClimate News May 5, 2015

A popular scientific instrument used to measure methane leaks from oil and gas operations severely underestimates emissions under certain conditions, a preliminary study found. The results could have major implications for federal policies as the Obama administration moves to regulate methane from the natural gas industry.

The research paper raises serious questions about the validity of existing methane data. Measurements taken by the instrument are frequently used by the Environmental Protection Agency to estimate industrial releases of methane—a greenhouse gas dozens of time more potent than carbon dioxide. In fact, the EPA lists the device as an approved tool that oil and gas companies can use to measure and report their methane emissions.

“It could be a big deal,” especially if it turns out the EPA is underestimating methane leaks, said study co-author Amy Townsend-Small, a geology professor at the University of Cincinnati. The paper was published in late March 2015 in the peer-reviewed Journal of the Air & Waste Management Association.

Fracking foes accuse industry of manipulating science

The oil and gas industry sponsors and spins research to shape the scientific debate over horizontal hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, according to a watchdog group’s analysis of more than 130 documents distributed to policymakers by industry representatives. Huffington Post, Feb 21 2015
