Since 1967, the fossil fuel industry has known that injection wells cause earthquakes. The industry, in collusion with many state government regulatory agencies, has repeatedly denied this linkage publicly despite repeated studies showing the link.

SA Liberals pledge 10 year moratorium on fracking in the south-east
The oil and gas industry is furious over the South Australian Liberal Party’s pledge to impose a 10-year fracking ban in the state’s south-east. The State Opposition has promised a moratorium, after an inquiry found there was no social licence from the local community for the unconventional gas industry. The Greens have welcomed the move, but oil and gas warn it’s short sighted and will hurt jobs and the economy.

Government Accused of ‘dirty tricks’ over controversial fracking report
United Kingdom Ministers deliberately delayed a report (Shale Gas: Rural Economy Impacts) showing fracking could affect home prices, health, and the environment until after a crucial planning decision, documents reveal. The report on the impact of fracking on the rural economy was produced by the Department of Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) and published in 2014 in heavily redacted form. But Greenpeace used freedom of information (FOI) rules to force the publication of the full report a year later. The report said fracking could cause house prices to fall and risk damage to health and the environment, but that it could also generate new jobs.

Researchers Zero In On How Fracking Can Cause Earthquakes
A new academic study reveals two ways hydraulic fracturing by oil and gas operators can cause earthquakes in Alberta, Canada. Researchers at the University of Calgary’s Department of Geoscience have discovered that tremors induced by hydraulic fracturing can occur through pore pressure increases and by stress changes. The study “Fault Activation by Hydraulic Fracturing” has been published in Science, one of the world’s leading peer‑reviewed academic journals.
