Canada attempts to clean up orphan wells – letting the O&G industry off the hook

The Narwhal discusses how Alberta postpones making the O&G industry pay $65 million in for orphan well cleanup. Alberta has quietly delayed its collection of $65 million in industry payments owed by oil and gas companies to a fund that pays for the cleanup of orphan oil and gas infrastructure. The news comes just weeks after the federal government announced a $200 million loan to fund the cleanup of orphan wells across the province.

The Narwhal also discusses how B.C. plans to clean up 2,000 oil and gas wells – Federal COVID-19 relief funds will aid in the clean up of dormant and orphan oil and gas sites in northern B.C., creating 1,200 jobs, but observers say the bad habit of leaving industry environmental liabilities to the taxpayer needs to end.
